Abstract
This thesis presents a competition-stage proposal for a new cultural precinct in Gold Coast, Australia, comprising a performing arts centre, a new art museum, and an arts-related landscape (“artscape”). The core question is how a design can evolve from an initial idea without losing its essence by deliberately using aesthetics and atmosphere as design tools. As a student project, it takes a conceptual view of the complex programme with theatre building as the main theme and a deeper focus on the main auditorium, where acoustics are a key parameter.
