Abstract

This thesis examines how Danish media framed the arrival of Syrian refugees during the initial stage of the refugee crisis from 5 September to 5 October 2015. Using securitization theory and a deductive approach, it conducts a framing and discourse analysis that also considers how the government and the public responded, and how national identity and security were related to Denmark’s response. A total of 1,252 articles were collected from selected Danish newspapers, with 45 chosen for close analysis within four frames: Security, Identity, Economy, and Humanitarianism. Findings indicate that media discourse frequently portrayed the situation as uncontrollable and that statements from different actors consistently linked refugees to potential security threats. The thesis situates these observations within Denmark’s history of refugee protection and integration policy.
