Abstract

This thesis examines how British newspapers and academic scholarship portray the relationship between immigration and terrorism in the aftermath of the 2005 London bombings. Drawing on social constructivism, the WPR approach (What’s the Problem Represented to be?), discourse theory, and Laclau and Mouffe’s concept of antagonism, it compares news coverage from two leading outlets, the Daily Mail and The Guardian, with research articles on Muslim immigration and terrorism. The dataset comprises 24 news stories (12 from each newspaper) selected via LexisNexis at roughly six‑month intervals starting on the day of the bombings to track the evolution of problem representations, alongside 12 research articles published after 2005. Four analytic frames organize the analysis: immigrants as criminals/terrorists, socio‑economic explanations, immigration restriction, and a multicultural perspective. The study aims to map divergences and overlaps in how media and scholarship construct links between immigration and terrorism and portray Muslim immigrants and the native majority. The provided excerpt does not include findings; this summary focuses on the research questions, data, and methods, with conclusions presented in later chapters of the thesis.
