Abstract

This thesis examines how TikTok’s virality contributes to the normalization of core fourth‑wave feminist ideas, including sex‑positivity and sexual liberation, critiques of toxic masculinity, body positivity, empowerment, and female agency. Using a qualitative multimodal approach, it analyzes selected viral TikTok videos identified via relevant hashtags. The study combines social semiotics (e.g., gaze, angle, and distance alongside music, speech, posture, and visual elements such as clothing and makeup) with feminist theory (including Judith Butler and Susan Pickard) and crowd psychology (Gustave Le Bon and contemporary applications by Carsten Stage) to show how platform design, hashtag circulation, and user engagement support the spread and uptake of these themes. Findings indicate that TikTok effectively transmits and amplifies sentiments aligned with contemporary feminist ideology, and that creators, through viral practices and audience dynamics, help normalize these key issues across the platform.
