Abstract
This thesis investigates how to create robust urban spaces within a cultural environment, focusing on Vågsbunnen in Bergen, where the municipality is pursuing a street upgrade. Through literature studies, a theoretical discussion of robustness and cultural heritage (including the Climate Paradigm), extensive site analyses, and integrated design, the work explores how to balance the need for sustainable, climate-adaptive solutions with the preservation of significant cultural heritage. The project results in a design for the ‘allmenningen’ in Vågsbunnen, with particular emphasis on physical robustness through rainwater management and climate adaptation to mitigate climate change and support the survival of heritage assets. The thesis concludes that robust urban spaces require both social and physical robustness and proposes three design objectives as approaches in the cultural environment: preservation, adaptation, and addition. It also identifies potential to strengthen the city’s storytelling through site-specific interventions.
