Abstract
This thesis investigates the implementation of flexible load management (demand-side management) in a residential area. It focuses on household loads with time-shifting potential—washing machines and refrigerators—by characterizing their use patterns and operational constraints. Using the Matlab Optimization Toolbox, optimal control schedules are computed to minimize distribution line losses and customers’ electricity costs. The optimized appliance operation is then applied to a distribution grid model in DIgSILENT to evaluate line-loss reduction and impacts on power quality. The report details the problem formulation, energy cost and loss functions, selected constraints and solver choices, and residential case studies. Simulation results indicate that coordinated control of flexible loads can reduce line losses and lower costs while meeting appliance requirements and considering power quality.
