Abstract
This thesis examines why US-led efforts to build a functioning Afghan state did not succeed. It considers both economic and political factors to explain the outcome. To interpret the evidence, the study uses dependency theory—the idea that heavy reliance on external support can create long-term dependence and weaken local capacity—and the concept of political modernity, which concerns the development of modern political institutions and practices. The main conclusion is that the US-led nation-building project failed because effective political development did not take hold and because Afghanistan became deeply dependent on aid from the United States and its allies.
