Abstract

It is now possible to integrate media into architecture. For lighting designers, this means not only mastering the aesthetic and functional qualities of light, but also understanding environmental data and, by combining the two, using light to communicate information. This thesis explores how such an informational layer can complement aesthetic and functional lighting design. As a case study, I investigate adding data-controlled lighting to the Smedstad Recycling station to make its environmental role visible to the public and to support environmental awareness. The goal is to develop a design in which function and aesthetics work together.
