Abstract
This thesis investigates how service design can encourage behavioral change in primary education by moving from linear to circular thinking about waste. It asks: How might we, through service design, aid in educating primary school students on responsible waste management and encourage a circular mindset? A literature review establishes a theoretical foundation in service design, circular economy, design for behavior change, and platform theory. Building on this, a design thinking case study focuses on environmental education through composting of bio-waste, using desk research, a survey, in-depth interviews, concept walkthroughs, and expert feedback. The work employs tools such as platform canvases, stakeholder and value network maps, journey maps, and a service blueprint to iteratively develop a school-oriented service concept. The outcome is a platform-based approach intended to support implementation in schools, make circular economy loops tangible for students, and enable value exchange among stakeholders. The process was constrained by COVID-19 restrictions and limited participant numbers, so findings reflect exploratory insights rather than statistical evidence.
