Abstract
Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan bedsteforældre og børnebørn holder kontakten, når de bor langt fra hinanden. Jeg designede, implementerede og afprøvede et technology probe hos to familier i Australien. Et technology probe er en enkel, eksperimentel prototype, der placeres i hverdagen for at lære om behov og vaner og for at inspirere nye designidéer. På baggrund af afprøvningen identificerer og diskuterer jeg temaer, der er vigtige, når man designer kommunikationsteknologi til bedsteforældre og børnebørn, som bor hver for sig. Herefter blev teknologien afprøvet i familier, hvor bedsteforældrene bor i Australien og børnebørnene i Danmark, for at analysere, hvordan tidsforskelle påvirker deres kontakt. Analysen bygger på eksisterende begreber og teorier om tid og begivenheder. Afslutningsvis diskuteres, hvordan teknologi kan designes til at understøtte kommunikation mellem bedsteforældre og børnebørn, der lever i forskellige tidszoner.
This thesis examines how grandparents and grandchildren stay in touch when they live far apart. I designed, implemented, and deployed a technology probe with two families in Australia. A technology probe is a simple, experimental prototype placed in everyday settings to learn about needs and habits and to spark new design ideas. Based on this deployment, I identify and discuss themes that matter when designing communication technology for grandparents and grandchildren who live apart. The technology was then deployed in families with grandparents in Australia and grandchildren in Denmark to analyze how time zone differences shape their communication. The analysis draws on existing concepts and theories about time and events. Finally, I discuss how technology can be designed to support communication between grandparents and grandchildren living in different time zones.
