Abstract
Denne rapport undersøger, hvordan et eksisterende multi-device økosystem kan udvides gennem en konkret case inden for musikproduktion. Vi præsenterer et system til at mixe lydspor, der kombinerer en computer, en fysisk kontrolflade og en iPad. iPad'en er gjort rumligt bevidst: systemet sporer dens position og bruger den til at vise relevant information og muliggøre nye, stedafhængige interaktioner med de andre enheder. Et studie med ekspertbrugere fra musikafdelingen på Aalborg Universitet peger på, at iPad-baserede interaktioner var nyttige og gav en mere direkte forbindelse til musikarbejdet, mens den rumlige sporing virkede forvirrende. På baggrund af resultaterne opstiller rapporten retningslinjer, der kan bruges i videre forskning og udvikling af multi-device udvidelsessystemer. Rapporten beskriver også centrale dele af implementeringen og skitserer ideer til fremtidigt arbejde.
This report investigates how to extend an existing multi-device ecosystem through a concrete case in music production. We present a system for mixing audio tracks that combines a computer, a physical control surface, and an iPad. The iPad is made spatially aware: the system tracks its position and uses it to show relevant information and enable new, location-based interactions with the other devices. A study with expert users from the Music Department at Aalborg University suggests that the iPad interactions were useful and made them feel closer to the production process, while the spatial tracking was confusing. Based on these findings, the report proposes guidelines for further research and development of multi-device extension systems. It also describes key implementation elements and outlines ideas for future work.
