Abstract
This thesis examines whether Carnot batteries—a type of energy storage that stores electricity as heat and later converts it back to power—are technically and economically feasible in Germany. Drawing on carbon lock-in (the tendency for fossil-based systems to persist because of infrastructure, investments, and rules) and the multi-level perspective (a framework for how niche technologies can move into the mainstream), the study identifies a window of opportunity if a viable market can be found. To explore where such a market could emerge, we analyzed the power sector by modeling and optimizing 21 scenarios using EnergyPLAN (an energy system modeling tool) combined with Matlab. The results indicate a promising case for using Carnot batteries to retrofit existing coal-fired power plants.
