Abstract

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a long-term condition affecting the digestive system. Staying on prescribed treatment helps prevent flare-ups and improves health. Mobile health (mHealth) apps can support treatment adherence with features like reminders and medication tracking. This project designed and evaluated an mHealth app to support medication adherence for people with IBD. The app was built in React Native, a framework for building mobile apps. We evaluated it through task-based usability testing, standardized questionnaires—the mHealth App Usability Questionnaire (MAUQ) and the Perceived Competence Scale (PCS)—and semi-structured interviews. Fifteen participants completed nine tasks to assess the app’s usability and functionality. On 7-point rating scales, average scores were 5.54 on the MAUQ and 5.62 on the PCS, indicating high perceived usability and competence. There was also a strong positive relationship between perceived usability and perceived competence: participants who rated the app as easier to use also felt more capable of managing their medication with it.
