Abstract
Civil society is important for democracy and human rights, but it often faces pressure. Focusing on Hungarian environmental civil society organizations, this thesis examines Europeanisation as a way to build resilience. The research question is: How do Hungarian environmental CSOs respond to hostile domestic conditions through processes of Europeanisation? Drawing on theories of Europeanisation, the thesis argues that CSOs are pressured to adapt their structures and strategies when the domestic context is hostile. It describes how this adaptation takes the form of Europeanisation, understood as a closer alignment with EU-level rules, practices, and arenas.
