Abstract

Civil society is widely seen as essential for democracy and human rights, yet it often comes under pressure. Focusing on Hungarian environmental civil society organizations (CSOs), this thesis explores Europeanisation as a possible way to build resilience. It asks: How do these organizations respond to a hostile domestic environment through processes of Europeanisation? Drawing on theories of Europeanisation—understood here as closer links to European institutions, norms, and networks—the thesis argues that CSOs are pushed to adjust their internal structures and strategies. It describes how these adaptations take the form of Europeanisation.
