Abstract

Data traffic is growing fast and smart technologies are spreading, making the telecom industry highly dynamic. Telecom network operators—the companies that run mobile and internet networks—are scanning the market for ways to stay profitable and keep all stakeholders in the telecommunications value chain satisfied. Performance differs across regions because of market conditions, regulation, and technological change, which shape the long-term sustainability of business strategies. In Europe, operators face a particularly sensitive moment: accelerating data demand, rapid technology shifts, and unfair competition that benefits from current market rules. Yet some promising solutions may also stem from these same forces. This thesis offers an overview of the key challenges and opportunities for European network operators and proposes a set of connected solutions designed to relieve the strongest pressures while adapting to the new business environment. A major case study anchors the analysis and reflects on operators’ position amid emerging trends and the need for new business models, as well as on opportunities to strengthen their market standing. The thesis concludes with discussion of findings, conclusions aligned with the research problem, and recommendations for future research.
