Specialet undersøger, hvordan socialt udsatte unge oplever og håndterer det senmoderne samfunds præstations- og normalitetskrav, og hvordan disse betingelser påvirker deres muligheder for anerkendelse. Med afsæt i en kritisk hermeneutisk tilgang og en teoretisk ramme om anerkendelse, præstationssamfundet og konkurrencestaten kobles eksisterende forskning med seks kvalitative livsverdensinterview med unge, der typisk har komplekse og langvarige problemstillinger. Specialet placerer problemstillingen i en udvikling, hvor udsathed både forværres for de mest sårbare og breder sig til nye grupper, og hvor velfærdssystemets organisering ofte udfordrer helhedsorienterede indsatser. Analysen er struktureret omkring tre temaer: et udmattende ungdomsliv, en uretfærdig anerkendelseskamp og alternative veje til anerkendelse. Hermed belyser specialet de samfundsmæssige forhold, der vanskeliggør unges anerkendelsesbetingelser, og hvordan de unge selv orienterer sig i og modstår snævre normalitetsforventninger.

This thesis examines how socially vulnerable young people experience and navigate the late modern society’s demands for performance and conformity, and how these conditions shape their possibilities for social recognition. Using a critical hermeneutic approach and a theoretical framework on recognition, the performance society and the competition state, the study combines existing research with six qualitative lifeworld interviews with youth who typically face complex, long‑term problems. The thesis situates the issue in a context where vulnerability both deepens for the most at‑risk and spreads to new groups, while the organization of welfare services often hampers holistic support. The analysis is structured around three themes: an exhausting youth life, an unfair struggle for recognition, and alternative pathways to recognition. Together, these elements illuminate societal factors that constrain recognition and how young people orient themselves within—and resist—narrow norms of a ‘normal’ youth life.
