Abstract
Ringkøbing Fjord is a shallow lagoon on Denmark’s west coast, where outflow to the North Sea is controlled by a sluice in Hvide Sande. This project examines how wind setup (wind pushing water and raising the water level) affects calculations of the fjord’s water level. We combine wind setup with the DCA Flow formula and the Manning–Gaukler formula (a standard hydraulic formula for open-channel flow) to estimate water levels. To improve accuracy, we use stochastic gradient descent, an optimization method, to tune domain-specific constants in the formulas. The results show a slight improvement of about 1% in the estimated water levels when wind setup is included, compared with estimates that ignore wind setup.
