Abstract

This study examines how supply chain innovations could help Trung Nguyen Coffee participate more fully in the coffee global value chain (GVC)—the international network that moves a product from farms to consumers. Trung Nguyen was chosen because, despite strong capacity and quality, the company currently plays a relatively limited role in the coffee GVC. Using a case study approach, the research maps Trung Nguyen’s supply chain and its current position in the coffee GVC. Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and online sources. A review of key concepts—innovation, innovation systems, national innovation systems, global value chains, and supply chains—provides the analytical framework. Findings suggest that to deepen its GVC participation, Trung Nguyen should prioritize two areas of innovation: engaging in international research and development (R&D) and adopting new purchasing (procurement) technologies. The study also highlights the importance of Vietnam’s National Innovation System for the coffee sector: coordinated support from public and private institutions and policies can strengthen Trung Nguyen’s participation and, in turn, benefit the wider Vietnamese coffee industry.
