Abstract

Stereo-musik i hovedtelefoner giver ofte et smalt lydbillede, som kan virke unaturligt eller endda ubehageligt. Tidligere forsøg på at udvide lydbilledet har haft ulemper, fx øget klangfarvning—uønskede ændringer i klang—og andre tonale skift. Dette studie præsenterer en ny tilgang, der søger at forbedre lydkvaliteten i hovedtelefoner ved at afbalancere flere udvidelsesteknikker. Metoden kombinerer amplitudepanorering (justering af lydstyrke mellem venstre og højre), tidspanorering (meget små tidsforskelle) og især binaural syntese (efterligning af, hvordan lyd når vores ører i virkeligheden). Med standard stereo som reference gennemførte vi lytterpræferencetests for at vurdere metoden. Resultaterne viser, at flere faktorer påvirker, hvordan mennesker foretrækker rumlige kvaliteter i lyd.

Stereo music played through headphones often creates a narrow soundstage that can feel unnatural or even unpleasant. Past attempts to make headphone sound seem wider have had drawbacks, such as added coloration—unwanted changes in tone—and other tonal shifts. This study introduces a new approach that aims to improve headphone sound quality by balancing several widening techniques. The method combines amplitude panning (adjusting loudness between left and right), time panning (introducing tiny timing differences), and especially binaural synthesis (simulating how sound reaches our ears in real life). Using standard stereo as a reference, we ran listener preference tests to assess the approach. The results indicate that multiple factors influence how people prefer the spatial qualities of sound.
