Abstract
This thesis examines occupational safety and labour rights in Bangladesh’s garment industry and how they can be improved. It focuses on persistent problems in working conditions and on how the actors involved—their roles, power, and responsibilities—shape the situation, as well as potential solutions. Although Bangladesh faces many challenges, such as political unrest and inequality, the analysis concentrates on garment workers as a vulnerable group. They contribute significantly to the national economy but often cannot exercise their lawful rights because government laws and regulations are not effectively enforced, leaving them at the bottom of the power hierarchy. The 2013 industrial catastrophe, in which 1,138 workers died, made the need for change urgent. The thesis considers what has been done since then and what still needs to happen. The guiding research question is: How can occupational safety and labour rights be enhanced in Bangladesh’s garment sector? To address this, the thesis engages with the perspectives and arguments of other scholars and offers interpretations that lead to plausible conclusions and proposals. Recognizing that social science rarely provides absolute answers, it aims to offer well‑reasoned guidance for improving conditions.
