Abstract

This thesis develops an analytical model to predict throughput (data rate) and power consumption in a wireless mesh network, studied in a simple "Alice and Bob" topology. It also introduces a custom MeasuringTool to record actual power consumption in the network. Using the model and measurements, we assess the impact of network coding—a method that mixes data packets to reduce the number of transmissions. The analysis shows that network coding reduces energy use under high traffic loads, a result confirmed by measurements. Moreover, both the model and experiments indicate that network coding provides benefits even when traffic is light.
