Abstract

This thesis investigates which technical solution and business model are most suitable for delivering electronic textbooks to Senior High School (SHS) students in Ghana. Motivated by the growing use of digital learning materials and rising print costs, the study reviews e-textbook formats, devices, and platform models used elsewhere and assesses their applicability to Ghana. It outlines the SHS system and current print textbook supply, identifies key stakeholders (government, publishers, students, teachers), and examines contextual factors such as internet connectivity, device access, and copyright. Drawing on stakeholder inputs and the thesis’s referenced analytical frameworks (including technology adoption and business model perspectives) and triangulating data sources, the work develops system requirements and a business model for an e-textbook service. Findings indicate that issuing dedicated devices to students, using Android with ePub reading software, and adopting a brokerage revenue model best fit the Ghanaian context. The thesis also considers design elements for copyright protection and illustrates the service with platform and UML designs.
