Abstract

This thesis examines how the former Kjellerupsgade School in Aalborg can be transformed into flexible and diverse housing while preserving the building’s architectural and historical value. Using an iterative, integrated design process, the project develops through parallel analysis and sketching, where studies of the existing load-bearing structure, circulation, spatial conditions, and deep floor plans underpin new dwelling typologies. Daylight studies, energy optimization, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are integrated throughout to guide decisions on preservation, material choices, energy performance, and spatial organization, including how daylight can support open and adaptable housing structures. The primary focus is the main school building from 1901, with the former gymnasium addressed conceptually. The work indicates that transformation and reuse can reduce climate impact while creating adaptable housing environments rooted in the existing building fabric; detailed solutions and performance studies translate these insights into a concrete design proposal.
