Abstract

Ecotourism is a fast-growing part of the tourism industry, focused on trips to nature-based destinations and protected areas such as natural and national parks. These places are increasingly seen as a way to support sustainable development. To qualify as an ecotourism destination, a site should be grounded in sustainable and responsible practices, minimize visitors’ impact on natural and cultural resources, and have a host community that understands and applies ecotourism behaviors. The community should also be aware of local environmental issues. This thesis examines how the management of a natural park can successfully build stronger sustainability awareness among local communities and other interested actors (stakeholders). It uses Vanatori Neamt Natural Park in Romania as a case study to explore what conditions and engagement can help increase awareness and support ecotourism goals.
