Abstract
Tourism is a key part of Nepal’s economy, with a particular focus on ecotourism. Nepal’s diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity attract visitors who seek sustainable, nature-based experiences. This thesis explores the social, cultural, environmental, and economic dimensions of ecotourism through a case study in Nagthali, Rasuwa. Nagthali, a rural community in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, is emerging as an ecotourism destination because of its distinctive natural and cultural heritage. The research examines how ecotourism affects the local community, the economy, and the environment, as well as the perspectives and experiences of the people and groups involved. Using qualitative methods—semi-structured interviews (guided conversations) and participant observation (spending time in the community and observing activities)—the study highlights both the opportunities and the challenges of ecotourism development in Nagthali. The findings show that ecotourism in Nagthali has both positive and negative effects on local livelihoods, environmental conditions, economic factors, and socio-cultural elements. They also emphasize the importance of community involvement, cultural heritage preservation, effective promotion, and environmentally friendly tourism practices in shaping Nagthali, Rasuwa’s future as a leading ecotourism destination. The study adds to existing knowledge on ecotourism and offers practical recommendations for policymakers, local communities, researchers, and tourism professionals.
Turisme er en vigtig del af Nepals økonomi, med særlig vægt på økoturisme. Nepals varierede landskaber og rige biodiversitet tiltrækker rejsende, som søger bæredygtige, naturbaserede oplevelser. Dette speciale undersøger de sociale, kulturelle, miljømæssige og økonomiske sider af økoturisme med et casestudie fra Nagthali i Rasuwa-distriktet. Resultaterne understreger også betydningen af lokalt engagement, bevaring af kulturarv, målrettet promovering samt miljøvenlige turismepraksisser for den fremtidige udvikling af Nagthali i Rasuwa som et fremtrædende økoturismemål. Studiet bidrager til viden om økoturisme og giver praktiske anbefalinger til beslutningstagere, lokalsamfund, forskere og turismefagfolk.
