Abstract

Dynamic traffic signs, in a national and international context, are described through a litera-ture study. The structure of the literature study is mainly based upon a new categorisation of dynamic traffic signs into qualitative dynamic signs, quantitative dynamic signs and sym-bolic dynamic signs, covering all types of dynamic traffic signs. Experiences with practical use of the different dynamic signs are described. Driving behaviour towards the dynamic traffic signs and the information provided by the signs are covered as well, where it is possi-ble. Examples are given, with the three main locations in Denmark where dynamic traffic signs are implemented. Finally, the structure and components of IT-technologies used for dynamic sign systems and the international experiences with dynamic signs differing from the Danish experiences are described. Socio-economic evaluation frames for the three different types of dynamic traffic signs are carried out for future implementations of dynamic traffic sign systems in Denmark. Through the process of carrying out the evaluation frame, it occurred that the consistency and accu-racy of these are mainly determined by the performing of future Danish research and studies of experiences with, and driving behaviour towards, the dynamic signs. Based upon the assumption that Danish research and studies concerning experiences with, and driving behaviour towards, dynamic signs are carried out, it is finally concluded, that the following mentioned implementations of dynamic signs will succeed in a Danish context: • Improvements of traffic flow and traffic safety in locations with T-intersections, where a secondary traffic flow has to interweave with a primary traffic flow. • Improvements of traffic flow by optimizing the use of road capacity from a greater road network to deal with traffic handling, especially nearby the great cities in Denmark.
