Abstract

This thesis examines cursor nudging, a subtle form of digital nudging that influences user decisions through cursor movements and visual cues, with the goal of understanding its impact on behavior and its applicability to clinical decision support. Two complementary studies were conducted. Study 1 was an online, controlled web application with 35 general users who experienced four nudge types (Border, Crawl, Pointer, Shape); it collected primarily quantitative ratings of effectiveness and user experience. Participants reported a generally positive reception, with the visual Shape nudge rated highest for both impact and satisfaction. Many felt guided by the nudges while highlighting tensions between guidance and a sense of control. Study 2 focused on the clinical domain and qualitatively evaluated the Border nudge with medical professionals making diagnostic decisions. Clinicians reported that the nudge could help manage extensive medical knowledge, reduce cognitive load, make choices more deliberate, and save time, while also raising concerns about potential over-reliance on AI and the need for transparency.
