Abstract

In recent years, departures from Danish airports have grown while charter passengers have stagnated or declined, sparking debate about whether online platforms—OTAs, metasearch, and sharing-economy models—are a disruptive threat to Danish charter agencies or simply expand the market. This thesis examines how the travel industry has experienced disruption in the past, whether similar patterns are traceable today, and how prepared Danish charter operators are for future disruptive innovations. It develops a tailored framework that combines Clayton Christensen's theory of disruptive innovation with insights from Hein and Honoré to both distinguish what qualifies as disruption and outline principles for organizational preparedness. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative design based on interviews with key ecosystem actors (industry association, charter CEOs, digital platforms, and experts), uses content condensation and a meta-matrix to structure the material, and situates the analysis within broader trends in digitalization, consumer behavior, and the making of Momondo. The analysis charts industry developments from the 1930s to the 2000s, differentiates sustaining from disruptive changes, and applies the framework to participants' statements to assess strategies, capabilities, and digital efforts in the charter segment. The thesis culminates in an overall assessment of agencies' preparedness; specific findings and recommendations are not included in this excerpt.
