Abstract

This thesis examines Formative Grammar (FoG), an epi-formal syntax theory developed at Aalborg University, with a focus on its distinction between morphological and topological syntactic signification and on how German fits into this framework. It pursues three aims: to provide a coherent, pedagogical introduction to FoG and situate it within linguistic traditions; to test the theory’s applicability to German through an analysis that combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives; and to contrast FoG with other accounts, especially Diderichsen’s sentence schema, with special attention to adverbials. Methodologically, the core concepts of FoG are presented and operationalized in a provisional “German calculus,” which is applied to German text material to identify morphological versus topological properties; definitions from the Duden grammar are used to contextualize observations, and diagrams help make abstract notions concrete. The thesis also contributes to the ongoing typological debate about whether languages can meaningfully be divided into topological and morphological types, noting that German and certain Romance languages require special treatment in FoG. The excerpt covers the introduction, methods, and problem formulation, as well as the start of the theoretical chapter; concrete empirical findings are presented later and are not included here.
