Abstract

This master's thesis focuses on controlling and stabilizing the temperature inside the fermentor (the sealed tank where organic material is broken down to produce biogas) of a biogas demonstration system. It follows a complete engineering process: identifying the control problem, modeling the system, designing a temperature control strategy, implementing it, and discussing the results. A heat-transfer model of the fermentor was built in Simulink, a simulation tool, for analysis. The control solution was then implemented using LabVIEW, an engineering software platform. The thesis reviews the advantages and drawbacks of the approach and suggests several avenues for improvement.
