Specialet undersøger, hvordan socialarbejdere møder LGBT+ personer i mistrivsel i et tværnationalt, komparativt perspektiv mellem Danmark og Bangladesh. Undersøgelsen bygger på seks kvalitative, semi-strukturerede interviews (tre fra en kommunal institution i Danmark og tre fra en NGO i Bangladesh), forankret i en poststrukturalistisk ontologi og en socialkonstruktivistisk epistemologi, og analyseret ved tematisk analyse. Fem gennemgående temaer identificeres: tryghed i fællesskabet, ressourcer, sprogbrug, multidimensionalitet og repræsentation samt brobygning. På tværs af kontekster prioriterer socialarbejdere at skabe trygge rum og fællesskaber, der kan reducere mistrivsel. Samtidig adskiller udfordringerne sig markant: I Danmark fremhæves korrekt pronomenbrug, styrkelse af klienters selvbestemmelse og udvikling af sociale, kulturelle og kreative kompetencer samt øget beskyttelse af LGBT+ klienter med konservativ etnisk baggrund. I Bangladesh indebærer arbejdet bl.a. mægling i arvesager, begrænset adgang for socialarbejdere til mental sundhedsrådgivning og navigering i en politisk anti-LGBT+ diskurs. På den baggrund peger specialet på, at danske socialarbejdere med fordel kan styrke kulturel kompetence og praksisviden fra andre kulturer for at adressere krydsende identitetskategorier, mens bangladeshiske socialarbejdere kan arbejde for bedre adgang til mental sundhedsrådgivning for sig selv og bredere oplysning i civilsamfundet.

This thesis explores how social workers engage with LGBT+ people experiencing distress through a cross-national, comparative study of Denmark and Bangladesh. The study draws on six qualitative, semi-structured interviews (three from a municipal institution in Denmark and three from an NGO in Bangladesh), guided by a post-structuralist ontology and a social constructionist epistemology, and analysed using thematic analysis. Five dominant themes were identified: safety in community, resources, language use, multidimensionality and representation, and bridge-building. Across both settings, practitioners prioritise creating safe spaces and communities to mitigate distress. However, the challenges diverge substantially: in Denmark, practices emphasise correct pronoun use, centring client self-determination, and developing social, cultural, and creative skills, alongside added protection for LGBT+ clients with conservative ethnic backgrounds. In Bangladesh, social workers mediate inheritance disputes, have limited access to mental health counselling for themselves to support empathic practice, and must navigate an anti-LGBT+ political discourse. Accordingly, the thesis suggests that Danish practitioners could strengthen cultural competence and practice-based knowledge from other cultures to address intersecting identity categories, while Bangladeshi practitioners could work toward better access to mental health counselling for social workers and broader awareness-raising in civil society.
