Designing Ambient Notification Devices to Mitigate Stress

Abstract
This thesis examines how notifications from mobile instant messaging can contribute to stress and explores whether ambient notification devices can raise awareness without inducing unnecessary stress. Building on prior work showing that modalities differ in their stress impact and that momentary alerts can be more stressful than prolonged ones, we conducted a design workshop with six interaction designers to distill guidelines for in-home notifications. Guided by these insights, we designed and prototyped four devices—Polaris, Monsoon, Framify, and Blossom—and evaluated them in a qualitative, exploratory field study in which seven participants each used one device in their homes for four days. The devices created awareness of incoming messages, but to a lesser extent than smartphones, and were perceived as less obtrusive and less urgent. These tendencies suggest a potential to mitigate notification-related stress, but the effect is only indicative; a longitudinal study with physiological measures is needed to more reliably determine the impact on stress.
