Abstract
This thesis presents the design of a backbone network for the new IT infrastructure of the North Jutland Region, with an emphasis on network planning and management. It begins with an assessment of the current infrastructure and the project objectives, followed by projections of population and bandwidth demand that underpin capacity planning. A stepwise methodology is developed to determine the number and placement of backbone nodes, explicitly addressing trade-offs between cost, per-node traffic, and the balance between access and backbone expenditures. Several candidate topologies (e.g., single ring, double ring, N2R (8,3), and 4-regular grid) are compared in terms of degree, average distances, and economic cost, and the solution that best meets the initial requirements is selected. A strategic deployment plan is proposed in stages, and the designed network is evaluated through traffic analysis and availability study. Finally, an investment projection is provided. Assumptions and methods are clearly separated to enable adaptation to other regions or updated inputs; conclusions and future work directions are outlined.
