Abstract

This thesis designs the access network for a new IT infrastructure in Denmark's Region of Nordjylland, using WiMAX as the short-term access technology and as a complement to future FTTH. It begins with an overview of broadband wireless and WiMAX, then analyzes the region's geography and population projections to clarify demand and constraints. A step-by-step method is developed for base-station placement, frequency planning, traffic estimation, and budgeting, guided by requirements for more than 95% coverage of network terminals, scalability, balanced load, and cost effectiveness. The method incorporates propagation and spectrum considerations, regulatory options, and practical siting factors, and is formulated to be reusable in other areas. Applied to Nordjylland, it yields a proposed set of base-station locations, an associated frequency plan, indicative traffic profiles per site, and an investment projection for deployment. Detailed performance results and exact figures are not included in the excerpt.
