Abstract
This thesis investigates how internal functions and external partners collaborate on Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) projects in the aerospace and medical industries, aiming to identify the key enablers of successful collaboration. The study follows a deductive approach, building on a systematic literature review of Design for X, DfAM, and supply chain integration, developing hypotheses, and analyzing multiple AM case studies using CIMO logic (Context, Intervention, Mechanism, Outcome) alongside a cross-industry comparison. Findings reveal a clear pattern of stronger external collaboration between suppliers and customers and point to core enablers that support integrated DfAM efforts. The work also proposes practical measures to improve supply chain integration for DfAM in these sectors. The research is constrained by time, resources, and COVID-19, which limited primary data collection, including planned interviews with AM service providers. The study adds value for both suppliers and customers in fields where integration for DfAM has been under-researched.
