Abstract
This thesis uses the Fjordbus in Aalborg, Denmark as a case study to show that making autonomous passenger ships safe is not only a technical task but also a local social process. Drawing on the Social Construction of Technology (which examines how people shape technologies), Actor-Network Theory (which maps relations between humans and technologies), and social practice theory, the thesis describes safety as something that emerges from the interplay among navigation technologies, institutional frameworks, and user involvement in Aalborg. The findings indicate that safety develops by delegating roles normally carried out by a conventional crew to autonomous navigation systems, and that how well this delegation works affects both the efficiency of the technology and the trust passengers place in the service. This interaction helps embed safety into everyday travel practices for prospective users of autonomous transport.
Denne afhandling bruger Fjordbussen i Aalborg som casestudie for at vise, at arbejdet med at gøre autonome passagerskibe sikre ikke kun er et teknisk anliggende, men også en lokal social proces. Med udgangspunkt i Social Construction of Technology (som undersøger, hvordan mennesker former teknologi), Actor-Network Theory (som ser på relationer mellem mennesker og teknologier) og teori om social praksis beskriver afhandlingen sikkerhed som noget, der opstår i samspillet mellem navigationsteknologier, institutionelle rammer og brugernes involvering i Aalborg. Resultaterne peger på, at sikkerhed udvikles ved at delegere roller, som normalt varetages af en traditionel besætning, til autonome navigationssystemer, og at kvaliteten af denne delegering påvirker både teknologiens effektivitet og den tillid, passagererne har til transporten.
