Abstract
The new European Water Framework Directive (WFD) has established a legal framework to protect water across Europe so that long-term sustainable water use is assured. This community action regarding water quality requires Member States to report a wide range of water related data like, inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters and groundwater. Hence, the need of data reporting to the European Environment Agency (EEA) has clearly originated a problem in the national organizations in charge of this purpose. This Master Thesis tries to solve this problem by modelling a database which could help in sorting internal groundwater related data in accordance with European legal framework. Along with the conceptual and logical data model, which was designed based on both, data modelling theoretical concepts and GEUS features; the thesis also provides a data standardization guide based on EEA resources, and a set of recommendations and best practices for a more efficient data management. All in all, this report attempts to offer GEUS resources so that they can deal with groundwater data with a particular regard to the European legislation. Last but not least, from a European level point of view, this report ultimately could contribute to the protection of water in Europe.
