Afhandlingen undersøger og foreslår udformningen af en kulturel ø på Holmen i Risør, Norge, som et kontekstfølsomt alternativ til den delvist realiserede og debatterede konkurrenceløsning fra 2008. This thesis explores and proposes the design of a cultural island on Holmen in Risør, Norway, as a context-sensitive alternative to the partially implemented and debated 2008 competition scheme. It asks how a new cultural centre on Holmen can enhance the town’s social and cultural life while preserving the protected core and the identity of Risør as a “white timber town.” Grounded in Nordic, timber and tectonic architectural thinking and the genius loci concept, the program and form are derived from local needs, traditions, and the site’s topography and spatial atmosphere. The study employs an integrated design process (PBL) combining historical and urban analyses, site and climate mapping, a field visit and dialogue with residents, developers and the mayor, iterative sketching and 3D visualization, and early engineering input. Structural and acoustic studies inform the proposal, with particular attention to the interplay between outdoor, indoor and in-between spaces and to compliance with conservation regulations. The design process addresses sight lines, sun, terrain and paving, and develops key cultural functions, including a concert hall.
