Abstract

This thesis examines how Cuba in the post-Castro era seeks to reconcile economic adaptation to a globalized, capitalist world economy with the preservation of socialist and revolutionary values. Taking a national (state) perspective, it analyzes the 2019 Constitution of the Republic of Cuba and the official development documents from the Communist Party’s 7th Congress, including goals through 2030. Using qualitative document analysis grounded in historical context and the concepts of (de)coloniality, socialism, and path dependency, the study maps the state’s vision for national development and the ideological implications of renewed internationalization. It focuses on the tension between more liberalized development objectives and the maintenance of core features of the Cuban model, such as universal healthcare and education and a working-class orientation. The study also acknowledges limited independent data on Cuba and therefore relies on official policy texts as primary materials. Final empirical findings and conclusions are presented in the full thesis but are not included in the provided excerpt.
