Abstract
This thesis examines the role excursion operators can play in implementing CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) to advance a more ethical and sustainable tourism industry, using Bali as a case. It is motivated by the island’s severe waste management challenges, visible and environmental pollution, and cultural pressures associated with mass tourism and the vulnerabilities of small island contexts. The study asks three questions: What role do excursion operators have in implementing CSR, are they aware of CSR, and how do excursions influence a destination’s culture and environment? The approach combines a literature review on CSR, responsible tourism, authenticity, and tourism policies with analysis of the policy environment for CSR and ethnological observation of pollution issues and destination authenticity. The aim is to assess operators’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices and to identify how CSR can support better waste management, deeper community engagement, and value creation. The excerpt does not report empirical findings but points toward CSR-informed solutions and recommendations for operators and policy design.
