Abstract
This thesis examines the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on migration and mobility among young people in Africa. It focuses on how changes in movement between places affected labour market participation, widened inequalities, and undermined economic wellbeing. The analysis also explores how these disruptions contributed to mental health challenges and raised possible national security concerns. The study used a mixed-methods design that combined qualitative and quantitative data collected and analyzed at the same time. A concurrent embedded approach was applied, with qualitative analysis as the primary component and quantitative analysis supporting it. Thematic analysis was used for the qualitative material, and descriptive statistics summarized the quantitative results. Findings from Ghana show that the pandemic substantially altered migration and mobility patterns for young people. These shifts influenced participation in the labour market and people’s ability to make a living. Inequalities in work, education, and other settings intensified. Beyond the direct economic effects, the study identified indirect impacts, including more mental health problems and concerns about national security.
