Abstract
Organizations sometimes deny or downplay a crisis, even when it is central to the problem. This thesis explores that dynamic through the case of the National Football League (NFL) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition associated with repeated head impacts. Using this high-profile case, the study examines whether a universal, broadly applicable approach to crisis communication can be used in such situations and considers where such an approach may succeed or fall short when powerful organizations face reputational risk.
