Abstract
Research and creativity are closely linked: both aim to find new ways to solve problems and produce knowledge that communities can use. In creative tourism, the person is recognized as important, yet often not examined in depth. This thesis shifts attention to the people portrayed in the CREATOUR documentary from the project "Development of Creative Tourism Destinations in Small Cities and Rural Areas" in Portugal. It explores creative abilities, personality traits, and how people learn creative processes—at both individual and societal levels—and outlines different cognitive approaches that describe how creative thinking works. To address ongoing challenges within CREATOUR in defining "creative tourism" and identifying who participates in it in Portugal, the thesis proposes a new methodology that uses creativity theory to structure every stage of the research process. It adopts an arts-based research (ABR) approach, which employs artistic practices to both investigate and communicate knowledge. The study draws on the CREATOUR documentary and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires. In the analysis and discussion, ABR is further applied through a screenwriting-style analysis and a series of YouTube videocasts about creative tourism. Together, these creative methods serve as both inputs for generating insight and outputs for sharing it, aiming for a more democratic and collaborative production of knowledge about creative tourism and its audiences.
