Abstract
This thesis presents a design proposal for a new Copenhagen Main Library located near Axeltorv and Vesterport Station, intended to succeed the current, heavily visited facility in Krystalgade. The central question is how libraries can retain their societal relevance while evolving in the digital age. The aim is to deliver a visible, centrally placed cultural building that expands current library functions, attracts even more visitors, and supports both knowledge exchange and everyday urban life. The design is grounded in Nordic traditions and tectonic principles, emphasizing simplicity, material honesty, resilience, abundant daylight, and the integration of greenery to create spaces for contemplation and recreation. Methodologically, the project applies an Integrated Design Process with clear problem and vision definition, site analyses (climate, infrastructure, scale, typologies, and materiality), user and program requirements and indoor climate criteria, followed by sketching, concept development, and synthesis. Case studies of Copenhagen Main Library, Seattle Central Library, and Halmstad Library inform spatial and functional decisions. Dette speciale præsenterer et designforslag til et nyt hovedbibliotek i København placeret ved Axeltorv og Vesterport Station som afløser for den nuværende, stærkt besøgte adresse i Krystalgade. Projektets overordnede spørgsmål er, hvordan biblioteket kan bevare sin samfundsmæssige betydning og samtidig udvikle sig i den digitale tidsalder.
