Abstract
This thesis explores an alternative to centralized cloud services by distributing content across peer devices in wireless networks. Frequent joins and leaves of mobile peers make content management and protocol design challenging, particularly because redundancy must be restored when a peer disconnects to maintain reliability. The work uses network coding as a unified structure for both storage and communication, enabling nodes to maintain and repair data with a single code. It evaluates state-of-the-art repair techniques from distributed storage when applied to a limited set of peers that jointly preserve a file, and examines how these repairs perform over wireless channels. Protocols and software are designed and implemented, and repair sessions are measured (including time and number of packets). The results show that leveraging the broadcast nature of wireless links can reduce the number of transmissions needed to repair lost redundancy, pointing to more efficient peer-to-peer storage in mobile settings.
