Abstract

This project examines the short melodic sounds used as auditory signals at train stations, inspired by systems in Japan. We design new melodic alarms with careful attention to their musical and acoustic characteristics and build prototypes. Through listening tests, we study how musical features influence how easily people can learn to recognize and remember the sounds (learnability) and which ones they prefer. The goal is to identify ways to make melodic alarms more effective. The findings may interest music composers, researchers, and industrial designers.
