Abstract

This thesis examines how community work is practiced in Danish non-profit housing areas today and the challenges it faces. Using a case study design, it analyzes questionnaire responses from three individuals engaged with community work in Denmark and conducts a document analysis of an NGO project report. The analysis identifies four cross-cutting themes—collaboration, the importance of local institutions, avoiding ghettoization, and the influence of New Public Management—and discusses them in relation to relevant theoretical frameworks. Findings highlight the complex, multi-actor nature of practice, growing pressures linked to neoliberalism, and persistent difficulties with immigrant integration. The thesis recommends that future research include residents’ voices to deepen understanding of their experiences with community work in these housing areas.
