Abstract

This thesis explores how people with mental and intellectual disabilities participate in community life through a municipal living facility in Aalborg, Botilbuddet Tornhøjgård. The aim is to identify existing local practices of community participation, what these practices mean for residents and practitioners, and the facility’s role in advancing broader inclusion. The work is situated within international and national frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Danish inclusion strategies. Methodologically, it is a qualitative case study with an abductive orientation, using interviews and observations analyzed through thematic analysis. Four main themes emerged: (1) the facility’s practices and work approach, (2) social workers’ roles and challenges, (3) domains of participation including labor market, education, social networks/relationships, and leisure/physical activity, and (4) the concept of community in Denmark. Findings are interpreted alongside Danish policies and prior research to highlight factors that hinder or support participation. Specific outcomes beyond these thematic areas are not detailed in the excerpt, but the study offers insight into how inclusion policies are implemented in practice at the institutional level.
