Abstract

This thesis examines how a nature-based, digitally augmented, and gamified smartphone experience can communicate UNESCO World Heritage, focusing on the unique Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Sealand through the case of Jægersborg Dyrehave and Jægersborg Hegn. It addresses the tourism sector’s lag in applying gamification and a research gap in using gamification to support conservation in cultural/natural heritage settings. The study asks two questions: what content and interpretation a prototype app should provide to visitors, and how its gamified experience design should be constructed. Methodologically, it combines a literature review of nature-based tourism, technologically augmented experience design, and gamification with an exploratory, social constructivist, abductive approach; empirically, it draws on semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis identifies the status quo and challenges in communicating the site’s Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), relevant rules and conservation concerns, stakeholder attitudes to technology in natural settings, and the need for multi-level, coherent narratives. It discusses non-consumptive use of the landscape, technological options and barriers (including beacons), and ways to interlink narratives across sub-sites (Jægersborg Dyrehave, Jægersborg Hegn, Store Dyrehave, Gribskov). The thesis proposes an engaging gamified app that blends core motivational drivers (e.g., accomplishment, ownership, unpredictability, social influence, meaning) and mixes intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. Suggested mechanics include points and physical rewards, avatar selection, puzzles and geometry challenges, videos and visual re-enactments, digital guides, sharing and bragging, choices, and strong storytelling. The proposal offers a practical blueprint for communicating World Heritage in a fun, educational way that also supports conservation.
