Abstract

This thesis examines how climate adaptation awareness can be strengthened, using Copenhagen as a learning case. Framed by the question of what other cities can learn from Copenhagen’s experience, it undertakes a qualitative case study of three initiatives and organizations (Miljøpunkt, Den Grønne Friskole, and Life Exhibitions). A conceptual framework on environmental awareness and education, social capital, and network governance guides the analysis of educational approaches, learning settings, and enabling conditions (such as networks and funding). The study draws on a literature review, interviews with participants and experts, materials from the initiatives, observations, and secondary data. It explores relationships among the municipality, civil society organizations, and citizens, and how knowledge is shared in practice. Findings indicate that the initiatives can raise awareness and build social capital, and that outcomes would be improved through coordinated network governance among autonomous and publicly anchored actors with strong community ties, delivery across diverse settings, and mixed public–private funding. The municipality is advised to coordinate joint strategies and actions while delegating implementation to partners. The thesis offers practical guidance to inform more integrated approaches in other urban contexts.
